Sermon Notes for The Indictment of God (Luke 11:14-32) (10/11/2009)

Week of October 11

Small Group Questions

1.     In Exodus 8:19 Pharaoh’s magicians warn Pharaoh that “this is the finger of God” but Pharaoh’s heart was hardened and he would not listen. Many in Jesus’ audience in Luke 11 also denied the clear evidence of God’s work in their midst to their own peril. How about you? Is it possible that God is at work around you, but you have denied His work? Is He at work in your life now?

2.     Have you ever played the role of the subversive wife as a member of the body of Christ? What was the spiritual fruit that resulted from playing the role of the subversive wife? Did playing the role of the subversive wife help advance the Kingdom of God?

3.     What is the point of Jesus’ teaching in Luke 11:23-26? Discuss the differences between a makeover and a transformation. Read 1 Corinthians 2:2 and Colossians 1:13 and discuss in relation to the distinction between a makeover and a transformation.

4.     In Luke 11:28 Jesus claims real blessing comes to those who hear the Word of God and obey it. Obeying God’s Word means willfully and consciously submitting yourself to what God says. If you were to give yourself a percentage rating (without grading on a curve) how are you doing in hearing God’s Word? How are you doing in obeying God’s Word?
